Mather, Matthew

Entry updated 24 September 2022. Tagged: Author.

(1969-2022) UK-born author, hardware and software developer and cybersecurity consultant raised in Montreal, Canada; known for Near Future sf and Technothrillers. He began to publish work of genre interest with the Atopia sf thriller sequence opening with The Complete Atopia Chronicles (2012; vt The Atopia Chronicles 2012), in which multiplex Virtual Reality is posited as a possible escape from an Earth becoming hellish through Pollution and Overpopulation. CyberStorm (2013), again opening a series, combines real and virtual Near Future Disasters as Cyberspace unravels while a huge snowstorm isolates New York from the rest of the USA. In Nomad (2015), beginning the New Earth sequence, Earth and indeed the entire Solar System is threatened by an approaching pair of mutually orbiting Black Holes; this menace has apocalyptic repercussions including thermonuclear War. Although the eventual outcome is a near miss, Earth's orbit is radically perturbed; there are earthquakes and tsunamis; the sequence shifts into Post-Holocaust mode while continuing to foreground personal adventure and melodrama. Opening the further new series Aeon, Aeon Rising (2022) offers the Disaster scenario of a supernova flash that overheats the southern hemisphere and hugely boosts Climate Change; the resulting thriller action is perhaps overcomplicated by additional plot elements including Nanotechnology, sentient AIs and a virtual Alien Invasion of the Internet.

Mathers was a successful practitioner of self-publishing, initially as PhutureNews Publishing and later through his own Matthew Mather ULC and its imprints Pallas Publishing and Babel Books. [DRL]
