(1958-    ) US professional soldier and author whose military experiences during active service in Vietnam shaped his writing career, beginning with a nonfantastic series, the Night Fighters sequence [not listed below], which is centred on US Marines in Vietnam. Of sf interest is the Military SF Starfist series beginning with First to Fight (1997) with Dan Cragg (1939-    ), which is set in Space Opera venues, including some Planetary Romance sequences on combat planets, and an increasingly prominent role for the Alien race known as Skinks, a civilization inimical to Homo sapiens whose planned Invasion of Earth grows more imminent but whom ignorant liberals back home think of as potential friends. All Starfist titles were written with Dan Cragg, who has published only with Sherman. A sequence by Sherman alone, the 18th Race series beginning with Issue in Doubt (2013) is generically similar.
