(? - ) US journalist and author whose novels tend to emplace cross-over elements, short of Equipoisal thrust, into noirish environments, some of these titles being gathered into the Caitlin Diggs series. Of most sf interest are What Are You Made Of (2005); Alzabreah's Island (2008), which provides an Island setting for Genetic Engineering of males into Sex slaves; Myopic (2009 chap), in which an Alien's attempt to provide Earth with a Pollution-defeating Technology is opposed by profit-obsessed corporations; and Gods of the Machines (2010), whose detective protagonist, assigned to a colony planet (see Colonization of Other Worlds), suspects an Android of committing a series of murders. Starta's work is varied, but lacks much grace. [JC]
