Smith, Dean Wesley
Entry updated 12 September 2022. Tagged: Author, Editor.

(1950- ) US editor and author who remains best known for founding Pulphouse Publishing in 1988, whose various enterprises he dominated, in partnership with his wife Kristine Kathryn Rusch, until the press was closed in 1996. With her he also edited Science Fiction Writers of America Handbook: The Professional Writer's Guide to Writing Professionally (anth 1990), a Locus Award-winning vade mecum full of necessary data, though not supremely well organized. After a vignette in The Clarion Awards (anth 1984) edited by Damon Knight, his first sf story was "Adrift in the Erotic Zone" for Gem in 1985. He won an award from the Writers of the Future Contest for "One Last Dance", which appeared in L Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future (anth 1985) edited by Algis Budrys. His first novel, Laying the Music to Rest (1989), begins slowly, with an attempt to exorcize a ghost from a deep lake, but soon entangles itself in the routines of a Time-Travel conflict between warring factions; en passant the protagonist visits the Titanic, where it seems he may be stuck forever. With Rusch, he wrote the Tenth Planet sequence beginning with The Tenth Planet (1999), set in the Near Future when the eponymous tenth planet, which nears Earth every two thousand years causing great turmoil, threatens a millennial Disaster. The Seeders Universe sequence beginning with Dust and Kisses (2014) conflates Post-Holocaust extravagances and romance, as a returnee to Portland, Oregon, three years after an unexplained worldwide Disaster, meets an attractive man; the storyline soon exfoliates, however, into Space Opera territory.
Most of Smith's later work is made up of Ties, often with Rusch, including a range of novels tied to the Star Trek universe, beginning with The Big Game (1993) writing with Kristine Kathryn Rusch as Sandy Schofield [for further ties see Checklist]. There is energy and feeling in Smith's work, even in tales written for various proprietors, but also a sense of scurry. [JC]
