Smith, Nicholas Sansbury

Entry updated 12 September 2022. Tagged: Author.

(1983-    ) US author whose several series have generally focused on Near Future Holocausts and/or Disasters, the first of these being the Orbs sequence beginning with Orbs (2013), where it is decided that Ecologically ravished Earth must be abandoned, but the overnight wiping-out by Aliens of almost every human being (see Last Man) puts paid to the scheme to settle Mars. In the Extinction Cycle beginning with Extinction Horizon (2014), a crack military team (see Military SF) must attempt to nip a Pandemic in the bud; but the pandemic breeds Monsters who fight back. The supplementary Extinction Cycle: Dark Age sequence beginning with Extinction Shadow (2019) is written with Anthony J Melchiorri. The Hell Divers sequence beginning with Hell Divers (2016), which is set many years after World War Three has created a Ruined Earth, features the brave crews of Airships tasked to scavenger in the ruins for usable artifacts and tools. The Trackers sequence beginning with Trackers (2017) is a Military SF tale set in a Near Future America devastated by a North Korean nuclear attack (see Survivalist Fiction). It may be said that Smith spares no prisoners, of the left or of the right, in his renderings of Americas torn apart by external and internal enemies. [JC]
